A rehearsal with Huddersfield University student conductor – Charlotte Read

The Orchestra were treated last week to an opportunity to see Roberts teaching skills in action as he guided one of his student Conductors through Jupiter from Holst – The Planets Suite.

Charlotte, who is currently studying Music at the University of Huddersfield, embraced the challenge confidently and had no problems in leading the symphony orchestra through the famous piece, stopping on several occasions to fine tune the Orchestral sound, character or timing.

I personally found it fascinating to hear Roberts explanation of the various ways the baton can be used to get the Orchestra to do what he wanted and how a simple change in the way he moves his arms or achieves a down beat has a big impact on what I, as a player, am doing. There is alot more to this “stick waving” than meets the eye!

Charlotte is also a flautist and will be joining our ranks as an instrumentalist for our next concert – All Together Now!

We wish her all the best in her studies and who knows….she could be our future Conductor one day.
